Traditional Israeli Dance
First of all, there are dances of the Halutzim (pioneers) whose roots go
back to adaptations of Eastern European dances (e.g., Hora, Krakoviak,
Troika, Korobushka, Polka), some of which were introduced by the
Socialist-Zionists during the Second Aliyah period (approximately
1905-1914), when the first Kibbutzim (communal farms) were established. Hora
Aggadati is possibly the first true Israeli folk dance, whose origins date
back to 1924 based on movements created by Baruch Aggadati, a noted Israeli
dancer of that period. The dance as we know it today was adapted by Gurit
Kadman (considered the "mother" of Israeli folk dance) back in the 1940's.
Another well known Israeli dance, Mayim (water), was created in 1938 to
commemorate the discovery of water at Kibbutz Na'an after a 10 year search.
The first folk dance festival was held at Kibbutz Dalia in 1944, where
dances of the Halutzim were performed as well as other Eastern European
Jewish dances such as the Sherele and the more recently emerging folk dances
of local origin, such as Mayim and Kol Dodi. More folk dances of local
origin were performed at the second Kibbutz Dalia dance festival in 1947
(e.g., Debka Rafiach, Harmonika, Hava Nitze b'machol, Ken Yovdu, Mechol
Ovadia). By the third Dalia festival in 1951, Israeli folk dance was well
established with many other classic dances (e.g., Bat Yiftach, Be'er Basadeh,
Debka Gilboa) already part of the repertoire. Typically, the classic Israeli
folk dances were connected with various celebrations festivals and
historical events.

Since 1993 the Dance and Creative Movement program has been
given in the Omer school (Kerem Maharal) in the Hof Hacarmel
regional council.
Dance and movement classes include the studies of dancing,
movement and orientation in a spiral space that accompanies all
years of Elementary School. The unique activity is done in the
space, in couples and in small and large groups. During the
studies we form a framework where the students come up with
ideas, initiate activities and build their knowledge and
ability, while communicating with their friends around them. By
playing and having joyful experiences, the students develop a
positive attitude and openness to dancing and movement. In fact,
in most kindergardens there is a rhythmic activity to bring the
children closer to dancing in general, to Israeli folk dancing

Kibbutz Dance Troupe
The modern dance troupe has its roots in the informal song and dance groups
that have existed in Israel from its early days of statehood. The company's
direct antecedent was a small group formed in Gaaton in 1959, which became a
regional company in 1960. Now under the artistic direction of Yehudit Arnon,
the Kibbutz Dance Company embarked on its first international tour in 1978
and has ties to Kibbutz Gaaton, the first kibbutz to establish a regional
dance school.
The 12-member modern dance group is made up of performers who also maintain
full work schedules in their kibbutzim and who have served in the Israeli
Army. But no allowances have to be made for divided time and broken career
spans. These are highly disciplined and beautifully trained and rehearsed
dancers who bring not only an unusual sense of community to their
performances but the kind of individual dramatic resonance that was a
hallmark of American modern dance of a generation ago.
